Robert W. S. Coulter, PhD, MPH
Preferred Pronouns: He/Him/His
Title(s): Postdoctoral Scholar
Affiliation(s): Clinical and Translational Science Institute, School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh
Research Interests: My research broadly focuses on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth and young adults. Three common threads of my work include: (1) assessing LGBT health inequities; (2) investigating causes of such inequities; and (3) evaluating programs that aim to reduce these inequities. In particular, I seek to explain why substance use inequities exist for LGBT people compared with their cisgender heterosexual counterparts. This research emphasizes interpersonal factors (such as violence and support) and structural factors (such as LGBT inclusivity). Conversely, my research focuses on making less harmful and more inclusive social environments to improve health for LGBT youth. I utilize a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies to accomplish these goals, and have a strong commitment to health equity for LGBT populations.

Ron Stall, PhD, MPH
Title(s): Professor and Associate Chair for Science, Director Center for LGBT Health Research
Affiliation(s): Behavioral and Community Health Sciences, Graduate School of Public Health
Research Interests: Ron Stall is currently Professor and Associate Chair for Science in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences in the Graduate School of Public Health and Director of the Center for LGBT Health Research. Ron began conducting HIV research in 1984 when he started working with the AIDS Behavioral Research Project, the first longitudinal study of AIDS risk-taking behaviors in the world. Since that time he has published over 195 peer-reviewed scientific papers on many different aspects of the AIDS epidemic, including substance abuse epidemiology and its interconnections with HIV risk among gay men, AIDS risk-taking behaviors across the life course, and the epidemiology of psychosocial health epidemics among gay men, among many other topics. Recently, Stall has become interested in the combined effects of multiple psychosocial epidemics, or “syndemics” in driving HIV risk. His team is now working on a set of analyses to study how structural factors increase the prevalence of syndemic conditions among gay men and their relationship to the development of psychosocial health problems and how the study of syndemics might be used to inform combination HIV prevention models. Other NIH-funded RO1 projects on which Stall is working in collaboration with colleagues at the Center for LGBT Health Research include a major study of HIV risk among Black gay men, trajectories of successful aging among older gay men, the structural effects of laws governing citizenship rights of LGBT people on HIV incidence and survival among gay men and a study of short term PrEP use. Stall is also the PI of two training grants: a T32 to mentor pre- and post-doctoral scholars in HIV prevention research and an international training program to mentor scholars from the developing world in HIV prevention research. Stall is the 1999 recipient of the Chuck Frutchey Board of Directors Award from STOP AIDS/San Francisco, is listed as one of the most highly cited behavioral science researchers in the world in the ISI Most Highly Cited website, received the 2005 CDC/ATSDR Honor Award for Public Health Epidemiology and Laboratory Research and was inducted into Delta Omega (a public health honor society) in 2006.
