Health Sciences Diversity | Excellence in Health Professions Education

“Without the necessary rapport we cannot effectively and confidently serve patients. Within the School of Pharmacy, you learn to interact with diverse patient populations and how to solve their medication therapy problems.”

Tending the pipeline is key to increasing diversity in the health professions. To that end, the Health Professions Pipeline Initiative (HPPI) works to build linkages and partnerships with 6 -12/college education organizations with the goal of heightening knowledge of and interest in  health careers among Pittsburgh's youth - with an emphasis on underrepresented groups and economically/educationally disadvantaged populations. HPPI programming is designed to provide a real-world context for exploring health career options, and guide students in making informed decisions about health careers education.

Through collaborative efforts among Pitt’s six health science schools, UPMC clinicians, and community organizations that service elementary, middle school, and high school students, HPPI is able to provide:

        • open houses to Pitt health science schools
        • health career orientation
        • experiential learning activities at Pitt health sciences schools and labs
        • health care system site visits
        • support and information for families of young people who are interested in health careers
        • pre-college preparation workshops

HPPI is a continuation of the national Health Professions Partnership Initiative which was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges and funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The original HPPI funded three rounds of grants - beginning in 1996, 1998, and 2000 - and each were awarded for a period of five years. Twenty-six health professions schools were awarded (eighteen schools of medicine, five schools of public health, one school of nursing, and one school of allied health); the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was among the medical school sites.
